M12 draft #2 – Mill deck
I always wanted to know how good the mill deck is in M12 limited. If you manage to play just about right amount of mill creatures and have some way to stop/slow your opponent from swarming and constant attack, you can mill your opponent pretty easy.
Well, it’s not that easy, as you have to get some bombs to cover up your ass while you mill your opponent. Otherwise, it’s just not worth it.
I had to find out that on the hard way. I started drafting for a mill deck as soon as I got a chance to pick up first mill Merfolk, before I get a chance to see whether any blue bombs are coming.
Anyway, here are the picks:
I didn’t know how good the Call to the Grave is, so I went for a sure thing. Second pick Sengir promised that black should be open from now on.
Gravedigger is very good in limited, as it essentially lets you play two bombs if you get to draft one.
I must admit that I made the mistake not taking Ice Cage, or even Spirit Mantle, I took horrible creature instead and I pay for my mistake in the games. Both those cards destroyed me…
Then I saw the Sphinx. I wanted to try mill deck as soon as I figured that one Merfolk mill is already passed.
I got to draft four mill Merfolks, two sphinxes and two Jace’s Erasure. I wanted to build around these cards, but I should take Ice Cage and such cards. Turn to Frog is also a card I needed to get thing work properly in this deck.
I got Azure Mage, so it made my Erasures better.
I put in some fail cards like Suture Ghoul. That card is just plain awful, as it can remove cards only from your graveyard, and if you have Gravedigger, you are either want to keep something great in your grave until you dig it or you already picked one creature, and thus keep your graveyard without one card needed for Ghoul.
Cancel is really bad in this format, as you need to have three mana open at all time. If I were smarter, I’d put two Warpath Ghouls instead.
Jace’s Erasure isn’t that great, but in this deck it was good enough. Although you could just draft Merfolks and Sphinxs and mill your opponents successfully.
Sengir Vampire is very good. It can go in any deck, and if you see him after second pick, take it, even hate draft it if you aren’t in that color. Same with Doom Blade, don’t let some opponent get it. Of course, pick cards if they are good for your deck, but Sengir is very good card overall and for all uses.
I’m sure that I could go at least 2-1 with this deck. Even if I wanted to mill opponent, I needed to put more hitting power, just for defense if nothing else.
