Bombs will be bombs

Weekend is upon us, and this is my last article before the prerelease of New Phyrexia. I can’t wait to see the set, not because there is anything unknown in this set, but rather how it’s going to perform with those new mechanics.

Whole spoiler for New Phyrexia was known weeks ago, thanks to leaks from some pro players who got a “God book” from WotC. God book is a catalogue that contains all the cards from a set, and it was only a matter of time when will some of the players fall to temptation to spread that valuable possession. Three pro players were banned for three years, even a last year winner of Worlds. This is something that can have a large impact on play of the new set of Magic. Too much spoiler can really spoil the game!

New Phyrexia mechanic is going to be something that will change the play. I’m sure that there isn’t a person who isn’t familiar with the mechanic, but I’m still going to explain it. Some of the cards have a phyrexian symbol in their mana costs or costs of abilities. Phyrexian mana could be payed by the appropriate color or by paying two life. This would have a great impact on some unpredictable situations, but more importantly to selection of cards in a deck.

All will be one now has a meaning in game.

Let’s start from a prerelease. Three boosters of Scars, same of New Phyrexia is likely to create many doubts in deck building. When you are given the choice of having an outside color card in a deck that is awesome, and you have to pay two lives instead of appropriate mana symbol, it’s going to be an easy pick.

For instance, just look at Porcelain Legionnaire from Barker review of white in New Phyrexia. For two mana and two life you get a 3/1 first strike creature. Yes, there are many ways to inflict one damage, but this is awesome second drop.

Drafts are going to be a complete chaos, because you are starting the draft from New Phyrexia. You can draft many things that can be played for life, so you won’t be certain whether is some color open or heavily picked. I can’t wait to try the draft; it’s going to be fun…

Sleeves with a bomb. Yes, please!

I think infect decks lost a lot of potential, because New Phyrexia brought infect in white and blue, which isn’t something as great at it may sound. Especially drafts are going to be weakened, because now there is less chance to pick Untamed Might, and without that cards, infect decks usually stand no chance.

On the other hand, New Phyrexia isn’t any exception from any other set. There are many large creatures in this set, but there are some bombs. Reverse Phyrexian Negator, Karn, Sheoldred and many more are coming to spread the chaos all over the tournaments and organized play. If you manage to draw a bomb, you are likely going to win the game with it. Only difference with this set is because of phyrexian mana, you can die before you manage to play the bomb. It’s going to be interesting to see whether phyrexian mana is going to prove lethal against many players, or it’s going to give an advantage most of the time.
